Full Circle, by Rachel Hoffman Bayles
When you first welcomed us to this world
You wrapped us safe in blankets
And held us tight
And whispered loving soothing words–
Words we didn't know
But they felt like peace and safety–
Until our eyes closed in restful sleep.
Our whole life long, you prepared us for this world,
Wrapped us in your wisdom
And hugged us tight
Teaching us the meaning of words like Faith and Obedience
And most of all Love,
And the path to Peace and Safety,
Until we spread our wings, and even after.
Now we see you preparing to leave this world
(It feels far too soon)
But we wrap you in cozy blankets
Like a child
Hold your hand tight
And whisper words like "thank you" and "remember when..."
But most of all, "I love you."
And though it's hard to know if you hear,
Your quiet smile tells us you understand.
Your full life of giving and teaching and loving
Fills us all with feelings of peace and safety,
Even in the midst of this storm.
And when at last you close your eyes
And spread your angel wings to fly away home
The goodbye will be bittersweet:
For nearby, we know other arms await
To wrap you tight in their long abiding love.
Lips wait to whisper, "Well done,"
In exquisite language both foreign and familiar
Amidst bright welcoming faces
In a world of perfect peace and eternal safety
Where you may rest.
