John Scarlett

(Abt 1525 - 11 Nov 1571)

John Scarlett was born in England about 1525, probably in Nayland, Suffolk. On January 26, 1555 he married Margaret Martin at Layham, Suffolk, about five miles from Nayland. There are no further records of the couple in Layham, so they must have moved to Nayland. Margaret must have died between 1555 and 1558, when the register at Nayland starts, and John remarried, because when he died, he left a widow named Emma.
John had six children baptised at Nayland from 1559 to 1570, all probably the children of Emma and John. There are two older children known to be John's, they were probably the children of Margaret.
John's name was not on the 1568 tax list, indicating he paid no tax and had little in the way of assets. John was buried in St. James' churchyard at Nayland on November 11, 1571. That same day, administration of his estate was granted to his widow Em. No will has been found for him. Emma married Thomas Parish in Nayland on September 13, 1574.
