John Warren “The Younger”
(1 Aug 1555 - 4 Nov 1613)
John Warren, son of John Warren and his second wife, was born about 1555 in England. His father had a son with his first wife, who had died soon after the first child’s birth. That son was also named John, which was a common practice at the time, if the sons had different mothers. The sons were then called “the elder” and “the younger” to differentiate them. They are referred as such in their father’s will. The younger John was a cardmaker at Nayland, Suffolk and was taxed there in 1611. Nayland was the center of the weaving/clothing industry, and a card was a metal comb or wire brush used for combing flax or wool. On October 4, 1584 at Nayland, he married Elizabeth Scarlet, who was baptised Aug. 30, 1561 at Nayland, daughter of John Scarlet. She was the mother of all his children, and died early in 1603. His second wife was named Rose, she was buried on Aug. 11, 1610. He married his third wife, Rose Riddlesdale, on Apr. 23, 1611. His will was dated Mar. 27, 1613, and proved on Nov. 4. He bequeathed to his wife and children, and to the poor people of Nayland. He was surely buried in St James’ churchyard in Nayland as he requested in his will.
