Tommy Lee Evans

On Monday, December 14, Tom Evans, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 74. Tom was born to Genoula and Carl Evans on November 22, 1946 in Amarillo, Texas. After growing up in Colorado, he moved to Michigan to attend Michigan State University. It was there that he met his wife, Kathy. Tom graduated from Michigan State University in 1969 with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Tom and Kathy were married in June of 1970 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren in Grand Ledge.
Tom began his career in law enforcement in 1964 as a Dispatcher for the Las Animas, Colorado Sheriff’s office. By 1965, he rose to the rank of Deputy Sheriff. Tom also served as a fingerprint technician with the New Mexico Police Department. He moved to Michigan in 1966 and was hired by the Michigan State Police. In 1969, he served as a probation officer and project director with the Oakland County Courts.
Tom and Kathy moved to Wisconsin in 1971 where he then worked in a wide variety of positions with the Wisconsin Department of Justice. After returning to Michigan in 1988, he was again hired by the Michigan State Police. During this time, Tom was promoted to several positions within the State and served on and held office with many committees. In 2004, he was promoted to MSP’s Senior Executive Assistant of the Administrative Services Division and Executive Secretary of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Policy Council. In both 2005 and 2007, he was the recipient of the MSP Professional Excellence Award. Tom retired from the Michigan State Police in 2010.
Throughout their marriage, Tom and Kathy enjoyed yearly fishing trips to Drummond Island, and hosting family and friends at their cottage in Sugar Springs, Gladwin County, Michigan. Tom was a lover of all dogs but held a special place in his heart for the many Springer Spaniels he owned throughout the years.
Tom is survived by his wife Kathy; his daughter Andrea Nessel (Chris Rogers); son, Jason (April) Evans; his grandchildren: Emily, Cameron, Lauren, Harrison, Charlotte, and Ethan; his brother, Jim (Margaret) Litle; brother in law, Bruce Lanham (Larry Mariotti), and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandson Evan Nessel; his brother’s Jerry Litle and Bill Evans; father, Carl Evans; mother and stepfather Genoula and Bill Kenworthy.

There will be no services at this time. The family has entrusted arrangements to Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
