LaGRANGE — Mrs. Catherine Elaine Olinger, 62, of LaGrange, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Hospice LaGrange.
Mrs. Olinger was born August 29, 1951, in Montgomery, Alabama; daughter of the late Milton P. Sheppard Sr. and Elizabeth Hart Sheppard. She was a member of the First Baptist Church on The Square, and the Philiathea Sunday School Class. She attended Auburn University for 2 years and then received a bachelor's degree from Berry College, a master's degree from LaGrange College and an EDS degree from Troy State University. She mainly taught sixth grade science during her career which started in the Rome City School System for 2 years, Chattooga County System for 3 years, LaGrange City Schools for 4 years and over 19 years at Gardner-Newman Middle School where she retired a short time ago. She loved reading and had been a science club advisor, a girl scout troop leader, but most enjoyably she was a diehard Auburn Football Fan. .
Survivors include her loving husband of 42 1/2 years Ralph H. Olinger; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda Sheppard Leslie and John Leslie, of Summerville, a brother, Milton P. Sheppard Jr. of Birmingham, Al., a niece and two nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Olinger.
Memorial services will be at 12:00 Saturday at the First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul Baxter officiating. The family will be at her home, 125 Greenbriar Trail, and will receive friends at the church Saturday 10:00 until 12:00. prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or the family request donations be made in memory of Mrs. Olinger to Hospice LaGrange, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, Georgia, 30240.
