The obituary for Thomas Benjamin Bates on this page is correct, as he was born 5 Feb 1831. Thomas was a twin brother to Farr Humphrey Bates, also born on that day. Unfortunately, the gravestone birth date is in error.
The 1 Jun 1830 census lists their father, Farr Bates, with no wife or children.

Dr. Thomas B. Bates Claimed By Death
"He was one of Union County's Oldest and Best Citizens--He was Surgeion in 5th S. C. Infantry During the War Between the States, and Often Related Many Historical Facts of Those Trying Days".
Carlisle, Jan. 10.--Dr. T. B. Bates died at his home at Carlisle on Monday, January 8, at the age of 86 years.
He was the son of Mr. Farr Bates and Mrs. Catherine Danner Bates of this county and was born Feb. 5th 1831.
Dr. Bates graduated from Jefferson Medical college when he was about 20 years of age and returned to his native county to locate; here he practiced medicine for about 25 years and was an extensive and successful planter. During the war, he was surgeon in the Fifth South Carolina Infantry and never tired of telling the United Daughters of the Confederacy of "War Times," giving historical facts and assisting them whenever called upon.
He was twice married; his first wife was Miss Mary Jane Sartor, of this county, who died leaving one child, Mr. W. F. Bates, of Carlisle, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dr. Bates was married the second time to a sister of his first wife, Miss Sara Ann Sartor, who died January 7th, 1911, of this union one child survives, Mr. F. H. Bates of Albany, Ga.
Dr. Bates was a man of strong convictions and high intelligence, loyal in his friendships and was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors who knew him best.
He was buried Tuesday at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian church, three miles this side of Union, the services being conducted by Rev. J. F. Matheson. A large concourse of people gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to the good old doctor. The floral tributes were beautiful.
Among whom were the old darkies and his faithful servants bowed in grief at the death of their kind master.
