From the Holt County Sentinel-December 29, 1893.
Mrs. Perthena Varvel died at the home of her son, Washington Varvel, three miles southwest of Bigelow, on the morning of the 18th inst. She had been an invalid of dropsy for a period of more than five years; she was well known and respected by her many friends among whom she lived during her 40 years' sojourn in Holt County. She was a member of the M.E. Church and lived a consistent Christian life for nearly 61 years. Her maiden name was Lamkins. Her parents immigrated from the state of Kentucky prior to the year 1818 and settled in Boone County, Missouri. There Mrs. Varvel was born and raised; she was twice; first to Mr. Lewis, and secondly to Mr. Varvel. In about the year 1853, Mr. and Mrs. Varvel moved to Holt County, where they remained until their death. After Mr. Varvel's death in 1877, Mrs. Varvel made her home with her son, Washington (paper torn, can't read)-to call her dear children upward and onward to a better land, a land of rest eternal. The funeral took place from the home place to the cemetery at the brick church on Tuesday at 10 o'clock.
