Charles R. "Chuck" Colton, age 87, of Hays died Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Chuck was born July 1, 1923, at Ellsworth, Kansas, to George Francis and Iva Rowena (Munson) Colton. He married Fern Jacobs on November 28, 1947, at Colby, Kansas. He served his country with the U. S. Army during WW II with the 333rd Engineer Special Services Regiment. Chuck retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1986 as an engineer for 42 years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman and loved to garden and travel in his R V. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Optimist Club, Telephone Pioneers, Thomas Munson Foundation, and Fort Hays State Alumni Association.
Survivors include his wife, Fern of the home in Hays; daughter, Carolyn Sylvester of Wichita, Ks.; four grandchildren, Nicole McClain and her husband, Brandon of Olathe, Kansas, Andrea Fleener of Atlanta, Georgia, Kyle Sylvester of Hays and Christopher Sylvester of Wichita, Kansas; a great granddaughter, Maya McClain of Olathe, Kansas; Two brothers, Darrel Colton and his wife, Joyce of LeCompton, KS., and Lawrence Colton and his wife, Rose of Wichita, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald, his parents, a brother, Kenneth Colton and two nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW and American Legion will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 6 p.m. and on Friday from 12:00 noon until 12:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Elevator Fund or charity of the donor's choice.
