DECATUR - Clarence Lee Vernon, 76, of Decatur died 5:57 a.m. Monday (Jan. 12, 2004) in his home.
Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Faith Baptist Church, Decatur. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Rockco's Funeral Home, Montevallo, Ala., with visitation one hour before services. Burial will be in Ashby Church Cemetery, Ashby, Ala. Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Faith Baptist Church.
Mr. Vernon was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Centerville, Ala., the son of Jessie and Essie Smitherman Vernon. He retired from Sol Tick Co. as a crane operator in 1994. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, having served as trustee and deacon. He was a former licensed pilot, having enjoyed flying Cessna aircraft. He was a World War II Army veteran. He married Analda Eloise Frederick in 1950. She preceded him in death in May 1992. He married Shirley Joyce Eller in 1993.
Surviving are his wife; children, Jan Swope and husband Ed and Ronda Barnett, all of Decatur; Michael Vernon and wife Shelley of Mount Zion; stepchildren, Pam Marshall and husband Robert of Atlanta, Ga.; Patty Martin and husband Paul, Penny Weaver and husband Mark and Doug Davidson and wife Norma, all of Decatur; Susan York of O'Fallon, Mo.; brothers and sisters, Luther Vernon and wife Minnie of Alabaster, Ala.; Margaret Joan Allen and John Richard Vernon and wife Judy, all of Pana; Albert Vernon of Helena, Ala.; Shirley Cordes and husband James of Clanton, Ala.; seven grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and sister, Bobbie Sue Blankenship.
A special thanks to Dr. Velasco, Dr. Simpson and the hospice nurses for their loving care.
