John W. Whiting Sr.

John Whiting was a merchant/landowner in Boston, Lincolnshire and was the town Mayor in 1600 and 1608. Vice Admiral of Lincolnshire 1602. Information about his wives is fragmentary, but they may have included Margaret Bonner, Faith and/or Isabel.

In his will, John Whiting left a bequest to Rev. John Cotton, the parish priest of St. Botolph's Church, Boston and a prominent local Puritan. Rev. John Cotton (1585 – 1652) went on to become the preeminent minister and theologian of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Burial
From the Memoir of Rev. Samuel Whiting, D.D. and of his wife, Elizabeth St. John: with reference to some of their English ancestors. pg. 14.:The will of John Whiting, father of Samuel, is recorded in the parish register of St. Botolph, in Boston (England); and is dated Oct. 20, 1617, only two days before he was buried, and, therefore, must have been executed in extremis. The burial of John Whiting is entered on the parish register of St. Botolph, under the date 22 Oct., 1617
