Jean Charlotte Shepherd

Jean Shepherd Erwin, 68, one of the founders of Mountainview Nursing Home and wife of James O. Erwin, died Monday afternoon, November 27, 1967 at 3:45 p.m. after a long illness.
Mrs. Erwin served as chairman of the board of Mountainview when the former county home was converted into a nonprofit nursing home. Long active in civic affairs, she served as chairman of the Council for Spartanburg County committee that the the county home survey.
In April 1966, the board of Mountainview honored Mrs. Erwin with the unveiling of her portrait at the nursing home. Board chairman Everett Sexias called Mrs. Erwin "the guiding spirit who made Mountainview possible".
Mrs. Erwin, who taught chemistry and general science at Spartanburg High School from 1927-1953, was a past recipient of the Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year award and the Mary Mildred Sullivan award for community service from Converse College.
She helped organize the Spartanburg League of Women Voters and served as its first president in 1949.
