Paula Sue Reagan
(26 Aug 1930 - 15 Jun 1988)
Paula Sue Reagan McDowell wrote the following, undated, family history:
Our "branch" of the William Welch Stepp family had our first reunion six years ago at the home of Earl Heartstill Stepp in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. One daughter, Laverne, and son-in-law Bob, most grandchildren, spouses, and great grandchildren attended -- of William Welch Step II's.
Yearly trips to Hilton Head, South Carolina, by several of our families have provoked our interest in our Carolina heritage.
The 1870 Arkansas census conflicts with verbal information told me by my grandmother, Sue Stepp. It will take some investigating to affirm or correct what I remember. I was eleven the last time I read a letter from my grandfather's father to his mother, Clarissa, from a Federal prison during the Civil War. Unfortunately, the letter has been lost.
The penmanship was perfect. The language very fluent, and it was a farewell letter to a beloved wife concerning the hopes and dreams he had for their children. He instructed her to take the children to Arkansas to be near relatives.
My grandmother, Sue, told me the Stepps lived 35 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. As Union troops neared, working in the field, the eldest son, fourteen years old, ran to warn his mother but was shot before reaching the house. Their home was burned. The mother then took the children back to Atkins, Arkansas. My grandfather was a baby -- never seen by his father.
William Welch Stepp I (that I know about) was an officer in the Confederate Army, fought and was wounded in the Battle of Shenandoah and died in prison of pneumonia.
My great grandmother, Clarissa, operated a cotton gin business near Atkins, Arkansas -- continued by my grandfather for years. Clarissa did provide good education for her children. Papa attended Qyitman College, Quitman, Arkansas.
