Clarissa Stepp lived 35 miles north of Charleston, South Carolina. As Union troops neared, working in the field, the eldest son, fourteen years old, ran to warn his mother but was shot before reaching the house. Their home was burned. Clarissa then took the children back to Atkins, Arkansas, where she operated a cotton gin business.
