History - John Daynes was born in Norwich, England April 15, 1831. When he was 13 he became an apprentice to a watchmaker. After five years he completed his apprenticeship. At the age of 19, he opened a watchmaker's shop in Norwich. He left England for America on April 20, 1862, sailing on the ship "John J.Boyd" from Liverpool. The ship docked in New York Harbor and he left for Florence, Kansas arriving there June 11, 1862 and began his trek across the plains to Salt Lake City. He set up the Daynes Jewelry Company and his original store was on First South just east of Main Street, which he rented from Brigham Young. His business company grew rapidly and was located in several different locations, including the firm at 128 South Main Street. He was a choir leader, jeweler and dealer in musical merchandise.
