Obituary for Leslie J. Ansted
“Grief is the price we pay for Love” (Queen Elizabeth II). On March 1, 2018 John Charles Ansted Sr. lost the love of his life, Leslie Jane Ansted after a difficult but graceful battle with ovarian cancer. Leslie is survived by the “lights of her life”, sons John Ansted (Jennifer) and David Ansted (Joanna). Leslie and John lost their infant daughter Ashley on October 20, 1981. Leslie was affectionately known by Me Ma and Grandma Leslie by her favorite and most important people in the world, her grandchildren. Alexander, Nicholas, Logan, Ethan, Aidan, Avery, and Diana were the recipients of the best hugs in the world and all of her recipes. If you knew Leslie you knew everything about her grandchildren but most importantly you knew how perfect they were.
Leslie was born on June 26, 1945 to the late Jane and Walter Schuyler Seymour. She is survived by one brother Walther Schuyler Jr. (Susan), sister-in-law and friend Cindy Burke (John) and six special nieces and nephews (Kris, Allison, Holly, John, Erin & Bridget). She is also survived by her special friend of over fifty years Penny Seymour. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother-in-law Mary Hastings and father-in-law Kenneth Ansted.
Leslie, John and their boys enjoyed traveling throughout the years with trips to numerous places. Her favorite places were Mackinac Island, MI, Pentwater, MI, Siesta Key, FL. and South Bend, IN, where she shared and created priceless memories with her family. As the Ansted family grew, the tradition continued and she added visits to Virginia, North Carolina, and New Baltimore, Michigan to spend time with her boys, daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren. She always loved attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, even finding a way to make the 10 hour round trip to attend her grandson’s football games late in her battle with cancer. In 2010, Leslie and Penny took a trip of a life time to Italy. Leslie was a passionate Notre Dame football fan. She was also an avid reader, as books were her passion. Second to Leslie’s love for her family was her love of her labrador retrievers. She had many special dogs over the years and leaves behind her faithful furry friends Glory and Faith. Leslie and John supported many animal rights charities.
Leslie grew up in Flint Michigan where she cherished many hours playing with her dolls. She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1963. She went to Hillsdale College where she met the man who stole her heart. They were married for 51 years. Leslie returned to school while raising her family and graduated from nursing school in 1981 with honors. Leslie was the manager of Toy Harbor in downtown Traverse City from 1985 to 2012 and many people knew her as the Toy Harbor Lady. Leslie was a wonderful cook and enjoyed trying new recipes. If you were coming to her home, she would always prepare your favorite meals. Leslie had an eye for fashion. During her illness you could find her in the Cancer Center for chemo or a blood transfusion dressed as if she were going to her favorite restaurant. She always looked beautiful.
Leslie would want to give special thanks to the incredible nurses, physicians, and staff at Munson Medical Center, Cowell Family Cancer Center, and Munson Hospice House for the wonderful care. She was always so appreciative of their compassion and the countless heated blankets they would bring her.
Leslie lives on in the hearts and the minds of those who love her. Please join us for a celebration of Leslie’s life on Saturday, March 10th at 3:30pm at the Reynolds Jonkhoff funeral home in Traverse City, MI. The family will receive friends at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cherry Land Humane Society.
