Born in Denton, Montana to James B. Crump and Sadie Belle Turner Crump on December 24, 1917.
George attended school until the 5th grade, when he left school to work at age 11 or 12 to help his parents raise the family of George and 5 sisters. He is survived by his wife of 79 years, Evelyn Eunice Crump and one sister Maxine Smith. He is predeceased by Mother Sadie Belle, Father James B., Sisters Dorothy, Geraldine, Ruby and Jeannie.
After a stop in South Dakota, the family settled in Salem, Oregon, where George met his wife of 79 years, Evelyn Eunice Hein. They were married at the parsonage of the 1st Christian Church on June 3, 1939, separated only by George's passing on November 12, 2018 at Tokarski Home, a hospice facility.
George was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on the 14th of January, 1944 and served in the Pacific Area from June 24, 1944 until December 18, 1945. He was honorably discharged on the 27th of December, 1945.
When the Korean Conflict started, George re-enlisted and served from September 14, 1950 until February 3, 1952. He again participated in combat in Seoul, Korea and the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin campaigns, and occupation forces. His final discharge at the rank of Staff Sergeant was on February 3, 1952. He was awarded numerous commendations including the Bronze Star with a Combat "V".
After his military service, George returned to Salem, Oregon and picked up a hammer to worke as a carpenter for his father in law. He later went into business as a home builder and a contractor. He conducted business with eye to eye contact and a firm handshake and they served him well.
George and Evelyn had 2 children, Judy and Nancy, who both live in Salem with their families and children and grandchildren.
George and Evelyn both loved to fish and hunt and camp. They also enjoyed square dancing and round dancing and were members of several dance clubs.
George could always be found in the company of a German Shorthair dog, his favorite hunting companion. He owned many of them over the years. A crack shot with a shotgun, George was a charter member of the Salem Gun Club. He served as a volunteer firefighter, and was a member of Salem Elks, VFW, and other organizations.
Visitation will be at Howell-Edwards Doerksen Funeral Home from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. November 23, 2018. Services will be held on November 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Internment will follow the services at Belcrest Cemetery.
