John Simeon Putman

(29 Jun 1751 - 1 Dec 1820)

Aged 68 Years.
John PUTMAN Cpt./Rev. was born 29 Jun 1751 in VA. He died 1
Dec 1820 in Putman Community, Union, SC and was buried in Putman Cemetery, Putman Community, Union County, South Carolina.
John was a son of Zachariah Putman.

The following information was provided by Vonnie Cantrell:

On Dr. Bobby Gilmer Moss's updated roster of American Patriots who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain, he included John Putman (Putnam) who served under Thomas Brandon. From the DAR Genealogical Files, we learn that it was this John Putnam who served under Brandon:

*********************************************************************
PUTNAM, JOHN
Ancestor #: A106234
Service: SOUTH CAROLINA Rank: CAPTAIN
Birth: 6-29-1751 VIRGINIA
Death: 12-1-1820 UNION DIST SOUTH CAROLINA
Service Description:
1) CAPT.OF HORSE AND FOOT,
2) COL. THOMAS BRANDON
*********************************************************************
This would, therefore, be the John Putman who fought at the Battle of King's Mountain.
Reverend John Putman was not married to Francis Putman (I can't identify Francis). His marriage to Sarah Howard was well documented: they married March 7, 1775. She was the daughter of Nehemiah Howard,
DAR Ancestor Number A058089, and Edith Smith. Sarah is named in her father's will and is listed as his daughter and wife of John Putman in the DAR Genealogical Files. I do not know where Sarah was buried: she died in Union County twenty-three years after her husband.
John Putman was the son of Thomas Putman: his uncle and grandfather were both named Zachariah. The elder Zachariah died in 1753, so could not have been his father. From a descendant:
"THOMAS PUTMAN Pendleton District
This is Barnet and John's father. There are just he and his wife with a listing of 1-0-1. Thomas was a son of Zachariah Putman I, and was born in Essex County Virginia in about 1720. I think his wife is Elizabeth Barnet, but I have no proof whatsoever except that the Barnets and the Putmans lived together in Virginia and the Carolinas. He moved into North Carolina and bought lands in Granville County in 1754. He and his sons Barnet and John came to the old Craven County in South Carolina in the early 1770s. Elizabeth will die here in this decade, and Thomas will be widowed here in 1800. He is my ggggg grandfather. The line is Thomas Zachariah I Thomas Thomas Thomas Putnam from England."
I am wondering if the burial site for Francis Putman is for a male - Francis is usually the spelling for a male.
Please let me know your thoughts.
