Mary Frances McGlohon

(30 Mar 1835 - 3 Jun 1901)

A GOOD WOMAN AT REST -
The suffering Mrs. Mary F. Greer has so patiently endured for many months, came to an end Monday, when the frail cord of mortality was broken and the good woman fell asleep as sweetly and tenderly as a weary child in its mother's arms.
For some time her condition has been critical and heroic efforts were made to at least prolong her days, all to no avail. Loving hands ministered unto her every want, and nothing was left undone to alleviate her sufferings.
Her remains were interred in Oglethorpe Cemetery Tuesday morning, a large concourse of sorrowing friends assembling at her last resting place. The funeral ceremony was appropriately conducted by Rev. J. S. Elmore, who in a few timely remarks extoiled the virtues of the deceased and urged his hearers to let her life be to them an example.
Among those who assembled to pay a last sad tribute of respect were friends of the bereaved family from Montezuma and Marshallville, all bowed with grief, their hearts going out in sympathy to them in their sadness.
Mrs. Mary F. Greer was in age one of the landmarks of the town and county, being 67 years old. When a girl she was Miss Mary F. McGlohorn, coming to Oglethorpe from Jefferson County, Ga. in 1853. A few years later she was married to John M. Greer, a highly esteemed citizen of this place, who preceded her in death by fifteen years. Had he lived until Wednesday last, she would have been married exactly forty-five years. She left three children, Col. R. L. Greer, Dr. Chas. A. Greer and Mrs. R. H. Sutton, all of Oglethorpe.
She was a devoted member of the Methodist Church and always exerted her influences for good. Noble in thought, pure in heart and generous in deeds, her life was indeed well spent. She was thoughtful and kind, and there are few who have not enjoyed her hospitality and kindness.
