Charles Wallace "Chuck" Samford

(28 Apr 1923 - 17 Jul 2011)

SAMFORD Charles Chuck Wallace Samford, age 88, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, after a valiant struggle with complications from pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He was born April 28, 1923, to Charles and Ethel Samford, who later gave birth to his sister, Doris Marie. The family moved to various construction jobs regularly. As a result of their travels, Chuck attended different schools every year of his life until senior high when he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, in 1940, in Jacksonville. Chuck enrolled at GA Tech but his college studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U. S. Army 303rd Infantry, in Europe and Japan. He was later declared disabled due to deafness from the effects of heavy gunfire experienced during his Army service. After the war, he completed his degree in Civil Engineering, from GA Tech, in 1947. He met and married his loving wife, Mary, in Jacksonville, in 1951. They moved to Albany, GA, where they were blessed with four wonderful children. The family returned to Jacksonville, in 1964, where Chuck worked until called by the Lord into mission work. Chuck returned to GA Tech, in 1976, earning his M. S. in Hydrology. From 1979-1988, Chuck and Mary were assigned by the Presbyterian Church (USA) to Malawi, Africa, where he served as a water engineer. He and Mary fell in love with the people of that land, recognizing their many gifts and their many needs. After retirement, they continued traveling to many parts of the world, despite Chucks numerous medical challenges, including a return to their beloved Malawi, in 2006. Chuck and Mary enjoyed homes and friends in Atlanta, Highlands and Sky Valley, before returning to Jacksonville, in the summer of 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; their four children, Margaret Day (John), Charles (Donna), Louis (Frances) and Samuel Samford (Janet); grandchildren, Caroline Dale (Craig), Jessica Oumarou (Ibrahim), Peter and Andrew Day (Carrie), Timothy and Scott Samford, Mary Cobble, and Christopher and Samuel W.
