Douglas Edward Nickerson

Douglas Edward Nickerson, age 51, of Lascassas, won a victory over his battle with cancer at home with his family on Wednesday, November 17, 2010. Born in Abilene, Texas, he is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Cindy Sharp Nickerson, his son Drew (Mary Beth) Nickerson, his daughter Amy Kay Nickerson, and his grandchildren Taylor, Madison, Lincoln, and McKinley Nickerson. Doug is also survived by parents Luke and Marilyn Nickerson, sisters Nancy Nickerson and Laura (Clint) Owens, and brother Bobby Nickerson all of Queen City and Atlanta, Texas; father- and mother-in-law Cliff and Jane Sharp, sister-in-law Candace Sharp, brother- and sister-in-law Drew and Christy Sanford all of Lascassas, Tennessee; nieces and nephews. He graduated from Atlanta High School of Atlanta, Texas (class of 1977) and Harding University of Searcy, Arkansas. He played football at Harding University (1977-81) and was a graduate assistant coach. Doug taught math and drivers education and coached football and track at Belton High School (Belton), Mexia High School (Mexia), Pine Tree High School (Longview), Northwest High School (Justin), Spring Hill High School (Longview) in Texas, and taught math and drivers education and coached football and track at Cannon County High School (Woodbury) and Oakland High School (Murfreesboro) in Tennessee. He will be remembered as a devoted, Godly husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a dedicated coach. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and the outdoors, as well as reading, especially historical novels. He loved all kinds of music and loved worshipping his God with contemporary and traditional hymns. His dry sense of humor and thirst for knowledge will be missed. He was a member of Christian Life Church of Murfreesboro, TN, and he was a sponsor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes for many years. In his final year of coaching, Oakland High School won the Class 5-A State Championship in football, and Coach Nick was selected as the Daily News Journals Coach of the Year for Track and Field. Visitation will be at Christian Life Church, 745 Cason Lane, Murfreesboro, TN, 37128 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Cliff Sharp and Pastor Ron Kairdolf officiating.
