Winifred Heidenreich Samford O'Conner Hughes
ALBANY - Winifred Heidenreich Samford O'Conner Hughes 93, of Radium Springs/Albany Georgia passed away on Monday June 30, 2014 at Wilson Hospice House.
Wini was born on June 02, 1921 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late John Christian Heidenreich and Winifred Griggs Heidenreich. She attended Lagrange High School, LaGrange College and Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) where she was a cheerleader and sweetheart of Sigma Chi.
Wini was a homemaker, a Phoebe Putney Pink Lady, a member of the Daughter's of the Confederacy and an active supporter of the Albany Library. In 1957 the Atlanta Journal Constitution named Wini and her husband James H. Samford Couple of the Year.
Wini was featured in many articles for the Albany Herald and in 1956 she was also featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution for her widely acclaimed culinary talents. For many years, she wrote a cooking school column each week for The Sylvester Tribune.
Wini was a short AND long order cook for many of the throngs of friends and family that trekked in and out of her house daily; no one was denied and she was consulted at all hours, day and night, for her advice or recipes, which were freely given.
As an animal lover, no passing stray or pet ever went without shelter or food and this extended to the many friends that needed advice or a sympathetic ear to help them through troubled times.
In Wini's later years she took great joy in cooking fish and game for her husband Hill Hughes who was widely known for his hunting, fishing and golfing expertise.
She is survived by her daughter Pat Samford, granddaughter Tiffany and husband John Davidson; great grandchildren Katie and Johnny Davidson of Atlanta, Georgia; Grandson Tommy Blackwood and wife Andrea; great grandchildren Sage and Jetta Blackwood of Atlanta, Georgia.
Son James H. Samford, Jr. and wife Becky, granddaughter Rebekah and husband Bradford Nuss of Atlanta, Georgia; grandson James H. Samford III of Columbus, Georgia.
Step-daughter Gayle Hughes and her husband Bruce Warren Jr. of Marietta, Georgia.
Preceded her in death were husbands James H. Samford Sr., Roger J. O'Conner, and Hill G. Hughes, parents John Christian Heidenreich Winifred Griggs Heidenreich Beall, Stepfather Frank Beall, Granddaughter Amanda Louise Samford and Stepdaughter Nancy Hughes Ramsey Smith.
On Friday July 11th, 2014 at a Celebration of Life will be held with time and place forthcoming for family and friends to remember and celebrate the many wonderful memories and joys shared with Wini over the many years we shared with her.
