Services for Jimmy Dale Matthews, 71, Canton, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, at First United Methodist Church, Canton, with Rev. Nathan Hodge officiating. Burial was in Colfax Cemetery under direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.
Mr. Matthews died January 30, 2005, in Tyler. He was born April 26,1933, in Colfax.
He graduated from Van High School. He served in the U.S. Army. He attended NTSU prior to returning to Canton to operate Canton Insurance Agency, which he owned for more than 30 years.
He served as secretary of the volunteer fire department for 20 years, was past president of the Canton Kiwanis Club, served on the city council, was chairman of the draft board and the board of stewards of First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Tillie Matthews.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Wendy Matthews, Canton;daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Chuck Whitton, and Melinda and Robert Wacaser, all of Canton; brothers, Cecil Matthews, Colfax, and Virgil "Buddy" Matthews,Jacksonville; sister, Lucille Geddie, Colfax; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Hoss Williams, Jim Lockridge, Joel Reed, Ken Hensel, E.B. "Butch" Matthews, Chad Rose and Bill Eblon.
