Dr. Thomas Oliver Mallory Jr.

Thomas Oliver Mallory, Jr., age 84, professor of English emeritus, minister of the Gospel, linguist and hobbyist beekeeper and poultry breeder, died at his home in Sapello, N.M., on March 13, 2008.
T.O. Mallory was born on Dec. 24, 1923, in Dallas, Texas to Kate Samford Mallory and Oliver Mallory, Sr. of Kaufman County, Texas. He was married in 1948 to Mildred Pearl Hodson of San Antonio, Texas. They became parents of three daughters.
Mallory was for some years the unsalaried minister of the Eighth Street and Washington (Las Vegas, N.M.) Church of Christ and was active in the Ministerial Fellowship of Las Vegas, N.M. He participated in the Fellowship’s presentation of Morning Devotions on the radio station KFUN for 25 years or more.
During World War II, Mallory served in the US Merchant Marine. At the war’s end he was on the first merchant ship to enter Tokyo Bay, anchored near the Missouri 2 days before the Japanese surrender was signed.
Dr. Mallory (B.A. and M.A. Southwest Texas State, Ph.D. University of Illinois) was a teacher for 40 years, beginning as principal of a rural school at Fischer, Texas.
He was a teacher of English and Spanish at Port Neches, (Texas) High School and was teaching assistant of rhetoric at the University of Illinois. He was a teacher of English literature and language on the faculty of Southwest Texas State and New Mexico Highlands University, from which he retired in 1985 as professor of English emeritus after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the Alpha Chi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Sigma Iota, Modern Language Association, AAUP, the National Maritime Union and the Las Vegas Ministerial Fellowship.
Dr. Mallory is survived by his wife: Mildred (Milly), daughters: Katherine (Kathie) Kirk, Margaret (Mollie) Johnson, and son-in-law: Daniel Johnson, all of Sapello, N.M.; daughter: GeorgeAnna Mallory, Esq. of Albuquerque.; granddaughters: Carolyn Kirk Reeves (husband Isaac Wright), Andrea Kirk Baker (husband Jason ) and Frances Ann Johnson; grandson: Benjamin Johnson (wife Reyna); and great-grandsons: Keith Reeves and Jaden Baker; great-granddaughter: Kailee McCloskey; sister: Isabell Victoria Day of Wimberley, Texas and her family; close cousins: Mary Allison Hicks and Juanita Mallory Pace and their families; and numerous other cousins.
