James Edwin Shafer

RIVER BEND ― James “Jim” Edwin Shafer, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in River Bend at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Iris S. Shafer; four children; and three step-children. Jim was born in Brownwood, Texas, in 1928, son of James Marvin and Una Lile Shafer. He received his Bachelor's degree in Bio-Chemistry and Religious Studies from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He received his Master's degree in Bio-Chemistry from the University of Texas. After 30 years of service with the U.S. Department of Defense, he retired and received his second Master's Degree in Psychology from Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Jim taught Bio-Chemistry in the Nursing Program and Psychology in the Cosmetology Program at Craven Community College in New Bern. He was a Hospice volunteer in Virginia and North Carolina for many years, and received the N.C. Governors Award for Volunteerism. At Jim's request, and as a contribution to the advancement of medicine, his body is being donated to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Promise Place, 1401 Park Ave., New Bern, NC 28560.
