Individual Details

Marcus Alonzo Sanford

(31 Oct 1843 - 9 Jul 1931)

Marcus Alonzo Sanford enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in March 1862 at Pensacola, Florida in the 1st Alabama Company A. He was captured at Island Number Ten in Tennessee in 1863. The Battle of Island Number Ten was an engagement at the New Madrid or Kentucky Bend on the Mississippi River during the American Civil War, lasting from February 28 to April 8, 1862. He re-enlisted as a private that same year in 1st Alabama Company A at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was next captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana, on July 8, 1864. Port Hudson is an unincorporated community in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, located about 20 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, It is known primarily as the location of the siege of Port Hudson in 1863. He again re-enlisted as a private in the same Company in 1864 at Cahaba, Dallas County, Alabama, and continued until being captured at Nashville, Tennessee, in 1865. The dates he reported being captured do not exactly match the historical dates of the battles probably because they are from his recollection in 1907.
