(5 Jun 1951 - 4 Jan 2017)

James Edward Kmiec, 1951-2017
James Edward Kmiec, aged 65, passed away January 4, 2017.
He was born in Bellville, Texas on June 5, 1951 to Edward and Agnes Kmiec. He was raised in Houston. He married Jefferie Sorsby on February 13, 1971. They had one daughter, Jamie.
James joined The Houston Police Department and graduated with Class 45 on October 9, 1970. After rotating divisions, James served out of the northeast station until his official retirement on January 22, 2011. He was the last of "The Northeast Wild Bunch."
James was an accomplished marksman and military weapons history buff. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. Since retirement, James had spent time relaxing, trying to out-predict The Weather Channel, and taking care of his family. He enjoyed feeding the neighborhood birds, sitting by his fire pit in the evening, and cooking hearty dinners like beef soup and chicken and rice. He also made the best guacamole. He was a talented carpenter and made many beautiful and useful pieces of furniture over the years. He was also good at fixing things with his keen intelligence and Polack ingenuity.
James loved to visit his daughter's family near Waco. His favorite things to do were shoot targets with grandson James David, 12, and make his baby granddaughter Jillian, 1, laugh. James has passed on his love for old guns, collector coins, and authentic arrowheads to his grandson, and some day Jillian will appreciate them too.
James and his loving wife of 46 years, Jefferie Sorsby Kmiec, enjoyed fishing and traveling around America together. He enjoyed taking her to unique restaurants all over the Houston area and they occasionally ventured off for gambling in Louisiana.
James is survived by his wife Jeff, daughter Jamie and husband Jeremy and their children James David and Jillian, sister Deborah Hohensee and husband Kerwin, nephew Rory Hohensee and wife Stacy, niece Krystal Conde and husband Steve, and numerous great nephews and nieces. He is also survived by brothers-in-law who were also dear friends John Burts of Houston and Blair Sorsby and his wife Karen of Norman, Oklahoma.
James was preceded in death by his parents and sister Dolores Burts.
James was widely loved and admired by many family and friends who will miss his quick wit, infectious laughter, and increasingly elaborate war stories.
