Irene Foshee Brooks, 94, of the Bush River section of Newberry County died Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Born on December 18, 1923, she was a daughter of Eugene Hamilton Foshee and Nell Ward Foshee. She was married to the late William M. Brooks for 52 years. Mrs. Brooks retired from Whitten Center in Clinton. She was a member of Bush River Baptist Church, the Martha Franks Sunday School class, the Joyful Hearts Club, and a former member of WMU. She also enjoyed membership in the Bush River Activity Association and the 5th Saturday Night Supper Club. Playing setback was also a fun pastime for her. A loving and caring woman, she enjoyed cooking, especially cakes with fruit cakes being a favorite. When she served up her cooking, it was always her “Big Mama” servings.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary (Kent) Stroud of Kinards and Sara (Milton) Burns of Mountville; sons, Gerald (Sandra) Brooks of Clinton, W. Dixon (Judy) Brooks of Newberry and John Robert “Bob” (Nancy) Brooks of N. Augusta; sister, Betty Jean Hamilton of Columbia; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother Paul Foshee and sister Blanche Brooks.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:30 PM on Thursday, August 30 at Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Bush River Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Parker and Rev. Eric Truesdale officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
