Lodowick Gysbert op den Dyck

(27 Jul 1644 - 1737)

Lodowick was the son of Gysbert Op Dyck (anglicized to Gilbert Updike) and Katharine Smith of New Netherland, Long Island, and possibly Kingstown, Rhode Island. He was baptized in New Netherland (now New York) on 10 June 1646, and one of his four sponsors was Richard Smith, his grandfather. He was married by about 1690 to Abigail Newton, the daughter of Thomas Newton and Joan Smith.

Lodowick held various roles in the civil and military matters of the Rhode Island colony. In 1687 he was a Lieutenant in the militia, and the same year and following year he served on a grand jury. In 1696 he was a deputy, presumably representing Kingstowne.

He was still living on 16 Aug 1734 when he sold two tracts of land in N. Kingstown to his son, Daniel. In his will, dated in 1734 and proved in 1737, he directed his son Daniel to provide for the six children of his son Richard Updike.

* Richard, b. say 1691, m. _______ Eldred
