Richard Merriam was born before 1486, because he was of age when named as executor in his father's will of 1507. He was the son of Stephen and Juliane Merriam of Goudhurst, Kent. Richard was a yeoman farmer in Goudhurst. The name of his wife is unknown, and the wife he had at the time of his death was probably his second wife, because he mentions some sort of contract with his wife in his will. He named nine children in his will, which was dated February 1, 1547/8 and proved on May 16 following. At that time he was living in Goudhurst, although he had been taxed in West Barnefield in 1543. He named his sons William and Henry to be the overseers of his estate.
