Individual Details
Dr. Henry Roy Mooi
(1 May 1911 - 13 Jun 2005)
Henry Roy Mooi died June 13, 2005, in Holland, MI. He was born on May 1, 1911, in Holland. Roy attended Holland Public Schools and graduated from Hope College in 1932. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1936 and interned at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He married Marriette Anna Coffman in Coldwater, MI, June 24, 1936. She died in April of 1974. Roy served as Hospital Physician at the Michigan Children's Village, began practice in Union City in 1938, and moved to Coldwater in 1946. From that time until his retirement in 1976 he developed his practice in obstetrics and was affiliated with the Community Health Center of Branch County. He delivered over 10,000 babies and took some pride in that achievement. His hope was to obtain for pregnant mothers the medical devotion, which he felt that branch of medicine deserved. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His greatest interest was the practice of medicine, with his second interest being his family. Roy admitted that these should have been in reverse order. His other interests were Christian service, music and woodworking. The latter resulted from the fact that his father, who was a roofer, took him to work with him from the age of eight years. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a Director of the Branch County Bank, active in the Red Cross, Scouting, Sunday school teaching, a community orchestra, church choir, Community Concerts and sailing. After his first wife died, he married Helen Harman Walters, with whom he spent the years of his retirement. From 1976 until 1991, Roy and Helen enjoyed spending the winters in Florida. In 1991, they moved to Freedom Village in Holland. Roy is survived by his children Patricia Ann (Mrs. E. Larry Knight), Diana Jean (Mrs. Bernard Belouin), Gloria Lee (Mrs. Dewain Richter), Christopher George Mooi, stepdaughters Sharyl (Mrs. Gerald Albright), Lana (Mrs. James Foster), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen Mooi preceded him in death in August of 2004. A memorial service will be held for Dr. Mooi on Sat., July 9, 2005, at 1:00 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church on Marshall St. in Coldwater. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery will follow in a private service for the family. Memorial donations in Dr. Mooi's name are preferred over flowers. They may be given to the Community Health Center Foundation, 274 E. Chicago St., Coldwater, MI 49036 to be used for equipment for the obstetric unit at the hospital. Arrangements are by the Notier-Ver-Lee Langeland Funeral Chapel, 315 E. 16th St. Holland, MI 49423.
