Jack Elliott Thompson, Jr. was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 29, 1927. Dad moved to San Antonio as a small child, was raised by his paternal grandparents, Ida and Harry Thompson, and passed away peacefully at home during a Friday afternoon nap here in San Antonio, Texas on July 22, 2005. He was a graduate of Edison High School, Class of 1945. Jack Thompson proudly served his country first as a Merchant Marine then as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Reserves. He was always most proud of his marriage of 53 years to Elizabeth Helen Plumb Thompson, his "brown eyed, dark haired beauty" who predeceased him in 2002. Their children find great peace in knowing Mom and Dad are back together and are smiling down upon everyone. Jack retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in the mid 1980's after 39-1/2 years of loyal service. In their retirement years Mom and Dad enjoyed many car trips in the US as well as traveling to England, Hawaii, and a Caribbean cruise with the Telephone Company Pioneers. His many friends at the phone company and from high school often called him Pete, and even now, he and Mother's Edison High School Reunion group have continued to meet for Friday night Mexican food dinners. It is amazing that Dad and his best friend from first grade at Benjamin Franklin Elementary, Joe Frazer, have continued to talk and visit together these 72 years. Hobbies included reading, hunting, playing tennis and spending time with family and friends. He was an active member of Los Angeles Heights United Methodist Church for many years. Jack leaves behind three children: Katherine T. Box, Debra T. Flournoy and husband James and James E. Thompson and wife Rebecca; six grandchildren, Jennifer Box Minx and husband Rusty, Kimberly Box Soliz and husband Steve, James G. Flournoy Jr., Laura Flournoy MacDonald and husband Alec, Jason Thompson, and Ashley Thompson, and one great-granddaughter, Emily Rachel MacDonald. Funeral services will be held on Monday July 25, 2005 at 12:00 Noon at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Roy Wold will officiate with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00 AM prior to the service in the chapel. Pall bearers will be James Flournoy Jr., Rusty Minx, Alec MacDonald, Steve Soliz, Paul LeBleu and Jim Beal. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to Los Angeles Heights United Methodist Church, 802 Catalina, San Antonio, TX 78201. Sunset Funeral Home.
