Shirley J. Nelson, 90, of Sioux Falls, SD, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Family and friends will meet Saturday at George Boom Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. to process to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service prior to the Memorial Service at Grace Lutheran. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 3, 2018, at George Boom Funeral Home & Crematory, Sioux Falls. Family will direct memorials to Avera Prince of Peace Nursing Home for employee appreciation and the Sioux Falls Humane Society. Additional obituary information will be available on Thursday, August 2.
Shirley Donnelly, daughter of Henry and Clara (Iverson) Donnelly, was born February 28, 1928. She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, and also served as Finance Secretary for over 25 years. Shirley had an immense love and pride of the East Side of Sioux Falls and her local family heritage in the area. She was past director of the Minnehaha County Historical Society. She served on the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Board. Shirley was an active part of the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Club for 70 years.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ellen (Denis) Bakker of Sioux Falls, Charles Dunlap of Scottsbluff, NE, Dwight (Teri Gunderson) Nelson of Shoreview, MN, and Christine (Greg) Thompson of Shoreview; and grandchildren, Mark Bakker of Sioux Falls, Scott (Stacy) Bakker of Sioux Falls, Anna Nelson of St. Paul, MN, Henry Nelson of Minneapolis, MN, and April Thompson of Shoreview. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, James Dunlap in 1956 and Robert Nelson in 2001; and sisters, Joyce Anderson in 2001 and Donna Donnelly in infancy.
