Walter Watt Holt
(7 Mar 1859 - 5 Feb 1943)
Funeral services were held in West Columbia Sunday, February 7, for Mr. Walter Holt. Rt. Rev. N. Chafee Croft of the Angleton Episcopal Church oficiated in the ceremony. Mr. Holt was born March 7th, 1858, and died last Friday, February 5ih, in Houston. He was for many years a resident of Brazoria and a typical cattleman, being very active and riding his horse [July] until ill health prevented the past year. In his younger days he made long cattle drives to distant markets, taking many long and trying days to make the trips of which he never tired of telling the youngsters of. The old homestead has the honor of having the famous Masonic Oak on its grounds. Texas' first Masonic meeting was held under the spreading branches of this old oak. This tree is still standing and draws the attention of many a visitor from far and near.
Mr. Holt is survived by six daughters and two sons as follows: Mrs. F. C. Drier of Meyerville, Texas; Mrs. R. G. Powers, Mrs. H. G. Jones, Mrs. R. N. Henry, Mrs. F. S. Johnson, all of Houston, and Mrs. W. H. Holt also of Houston, and Mrs. S. H. Holt of Angleton. One sister, Mrs. Fannie Hoskins of Houston, and 19 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Of this large family there are several in the service of the United States. They represent different branches of the service such as the Army, Navy, and Marines.
