Individual Details
Annie Cantelin
(1885 - 20 Aug 1923)
Annie was born in 1885, the daughter of Mary and William Cantelin [1]
Mother: Mary Yeoman Chinn Cantelin 1848–1930 from Cornwall
The case of the family of William Cantelin, the man who was recently sent to prison tor stealing letters containing money, was considered. — Detective Grace reported that the family were quite destitute, and without furniture, and no doubt the daughter, Eliza, had been ordered by her parents to steal the letters. Cantelin was an expert shoemaker, and could have made from £3 to £4 a week, but he would not work, and had applied for charitable aid, which was refused. — The chairman said the owner of the house where the family lived had applied to him for the rent due, but he had refused it. He had, however, given rations, as Mrs Cantelin was just now unable to work. There was a son of 21, but he had disappeared, and two girls were at service, but got no wages. There were four children at home. — The Board voted 4s a week and rations for one month. [2]
Annie Cantelin was charged with stealing from Mrs Hartshorn’s boarding-house (1) a jacket and dress valued at £5, the property of Rea Potaka, and (2) a hat valued at 10s, the property of Kate Tusch. After hearing evidence, the accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed [3]
SENTENCES. In the case of Annie Cantelin, Mr Cresswell made a strong appeal to the Court, on behalf of the accused. The Chief Justice, after referring to the fact that accused had told an untruth, said he would grant probation for 12 months, but accused would have to pay part of the costs, and £5 must be paid in six months [4]
She lived in a de facto marriage with George Crisp, and had several children with him, the first of whom was born in October 1905. She passed away in 1923 age 38.
