SAMUEL JAMES "JIM" JAMISON JR., 79, (also Sam, or Jimmie) passed away at home with his family on the 25th of September 2008. Jim Jamison was an extraordinary man. Immensely likable, he made countless friends and left lasting impressions on people throughout his life. He had a priceless sense of humor and always kept his family and friends laughing. Jim lived his life as a Christian role model. He was a man of infinite kindness, patience and integrity. Above all, he was characterized by an unwavering positive attitude. Our family will miss him every day, but he will always remain a part of us. He was born in Beaumont, TX on the 23rd of April 1929 to Samuel James and Margaret Evans Jamison. He attended Houston public schools and graduated from Lamar High School in 1947. At Lamar he was a cheerleader, ran track and was voted Friendliest Boy. Jim was also an Eagle Scout. He went to the University of Texas where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1951. Jim held numerous jobs throughout his school years in banking, construction and as a page in the State Legislature. In 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Bertha Gray. After graduating from college he worked for Wyatt Metal and Boiler Works in Houston and Southern Engine & Pump in Beaumont. A friend then referred him for a job at Burkhead Manufacturing (now Old Smokey Products Company). He began as a salesman and later bought the company. In 1964, Jim built a home on some wooded land in Piney Point Village. He subdivided the property and created a new street which he named Jamestown. Jim and Bertha lived in Piney Point Village and Hunters Creek Village until 2007. His community activities included the Board of Adjustment and Democratic Precinct Chairman. Jim was a lifelong Methodist. He grew up attending West University Methodist Church, moved to Westminster and then joined Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where he was a loyal member for 44 years. Jim was a Lifetime Member of the Chapelwood Board of Stewards. He is especially remembered as a legendary high school Sunday School teacher. In 1969, he was instrumental in creating the Senior Service, a Chapelwood tradition which continues to this day. In his retirement years he was an active volunteer at Memorial Assistance Ministries. He also spent his time traveling, working in his woodshop and at his computer, and enjoying his family. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years Bertha, sons James and wife Clara of Dallas, Bryan and wife Stephanie of Houston, and Bruce and wife Martha of Houston, and grandchildren Jimmy, Angela, Emily, Melanie, Lauren, Matt, Meredith and Sam. He is also survived by his brother William H. Jamison of Florissant, MO, niece Melissa Philbrook and husband Andy and their four children of Florissant, MO, and several cousins.
