According to Heywood Genealogy, Thomas was the son of John Baldwin (1665-1736) and Sarah Heywood (1666-1741) of Billerica, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. John Baldwin was the son of John Baldwin, a native of England who appeared in records of Billerica as early as 1655 and is generally considered the original emigrant to America. Most researchers believe he married Mary, daughter of Thomas and Mary Richardson of Woburn, Massachusetts. Some researchers believe that John Baldwin Sr. was the son of Richard Baldwin and Phillippa Cockman of Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England.
However, according to a genealogy from Benjamin H. Baldwin in 1876, "Thomas, Joseph, and Benjamin Baldwin emigrated from Hartfordshire, England in the year 1640. Thomas the eldest settled in Billerica, Massachusetts. He had several sons, among them was Thomas. This second Thomas had three sons, Thomas, John and William. This third Thomas had eleven children, the last of whom was Benjamin Baldwin, who was born in Mansfield, Conn., and who married Ruth Paddock and settled in the town of Dorset, in Vt., in the year 1770." {Ticonderoga Sentinel, 26 May 1876, Northern New York Newspapers,
