Elizabeth Lines
( - 18 Feb 1922)
Mrs Elizabeth Humphreys, whose death occurred on Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs F. Woodsford, 81 King Street, Sydennham, at the advanced age of 82, had passed 80 years of her life in New Zealand. When she was just two years of age her parents, Mr and Mrs Lines, decided to try their fortunes in the new land at the other side of the world and took passage with their family on the ship Thomas Harrison, which sailed from London in 1842, and the same year landed them safely in Nelson, where they settled. Their daughter Elizabeth became the wife of Mr Frank Humphreys, and the young couple made their home in Blenheim for a for a short period and then removed to Canterbury, where Mrs Humphreys has lived for 64 years, the first three years on the late T. S. Mannering's station at Birch Hill, 51 years in Rangiora, and during the past ten years with her daughter at Sydenham. Her husband predeceased her thirty-two years, his death resulting from an accident met with when driving on the Rangiora-Oxford Road. For many years Mrs Humphreys was one of the best-known maternity nurses in the northern district and her skilful care of her patients and kindly disposition won for her a wide circle of friends who held her in the highest esteem. She leaves eight children, thirty-nine grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. There are three daughters, Mrs T. Nottingham, Rangiora, Mrs F. Woodsford, Sydenham, and Mrs B. Tarant, Wellington, and five sons, Messrs Frank Humphreys (Hastings), George and Charles Humphreys (Rangiora), Wynn Humphreys (Marton) and Harry Humphreys (Ashburton).
