Hughes Degruy Drumm Jr.

Hughes D. Drumm, Sr., a lifelong resident of New Orleans, LA died on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. He was 83 years old. He was the son of the late Streuby L. Drumm, Sr. and the late Honor C. Drumm. He was predeceased by his brother, Streuby L. Drumm, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Caroline Benton Drumm, their two sons and daughters in law, Hughes D. Drumm Jr. and Laura (Young) Drumm of New Orleans, Lloyd England Drumm and Melissa (Turner) Drumm and three grandchildren, Alexandra (Lexie), Hughes III (Trey) and Benton Drumm.
Mr. Drumm graduated from Newman School in 1950 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1954. While attending Tulane, he was a member of the Psi Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order. After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force, reaching rank of Captain. He concluded his military service as the Public Information Officer for the Air Force Armament Center, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
Following his military service, he spent over 50 years in the advertising/public relations profession in New Orleans. During that period he held executive positions with several companies including Bauerlein, Inc., then one of New Orleans largest advertising firms, Lykes Bros. Steamship Company and Diamond Head Corporation. During the last 17 years of his career he was Vice President of Advertising and Corporate Relations for Stewart Enterprises, Inc., which was at that time the third largest funeral home and cemetery company in the United States. Mr. Drumm retired from Stewart in 2002.
Mr. Drumm's civic activities included serving as a member of the boards of directors of the Better Business Bureau of New Orleans, the Metropolitan Crime Commission and Save our Cemeteries. He was a member of the Boston Club, the Stratford Club and the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club. He was also a member of several carnival organizations.
A private memorial service will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. Burial will immediately follow.
