Newton "Dock" Herring

(17 Aug 1844 - 27 Jan 1918)

Served with his twin brother, Rufus Herren, as a private in General Roddy's Escort; an Alabama cavalry unit in the C.S.A. Rufus Herrin is buried in Old Salem Baptist Church cemetery.
His pension application from 1919 shows his dates of service to be from Nov. 1863 to the close of the war in April, 1865. He claims to have been captured in Tuscaloosa County and was taken to Montgomery and paroled. Roddy's Escort was made up mostly from counties in Northeast Alabama and fought with Gen. Forrest at Selma in the final days of the war.
Received the Southern Cross of Honor for service in the Confederate army.
Newton was a brother of Caroline Herrin Jones (wife of Jolly Jones) who is also buried in this cemetery.
