Robert Ernest Peters died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Willow Ridge Retirement Community in McCook. He was 91 years old.
He was born, May 7, 1916, in Red Willow County northwest of Marion to John Coleman and Mina (Drain) Peters. At age three he moved with his family southwest of McCook to the present farm in Hitchcock County. He attended rural school and McCook High School.
Robert married Velma Elizabeth Liebrandt at Ash Creek St John's Lutheran Church on May 7, 1936. She died on Dec. 24, 1975. He then married Olive Bolles in McCook in 1976, and she died on July 25, 1997.
He lived in this community all of his life and was an active and progressive farmer who took great pride in the husbandry of the land. Robert had the privilege to farm with four generations of his family and enjoyed watching the blossoming of a fifth generation. He lived on the farm southwest of McCook and raised corn, wheat, sorghum, and cattle for 70 years before retiring and moving to Willow Ridge in McCook in 2006.
He loved his family, grandchildren, and especially great-grandchildren. He had a passion for farming, cars and traveling (especially in Alaska).
Robert was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, and a past member of the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and the Red Willow Weed Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; his second wife Olive; granddaughter-in-law, Mindy Lutz; and sister-in-law, Elaine M. Peters.
Survivors include special friend, Virginia Myers; children, Deanna Anderson and husband, George of Bismarck, N.D., Sandra Lutz of Lafayette, Colo., Randy Peters and wife, Elaine and Rodney Peters and wife, Marlyn, all of McCook; brother, Floyd Peters of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters, Elaine Stevens and husband, Ralph of McCook and Evelyn Hall and husband, Carrol of Norton, Kan.; 14 grandchildren, Mark Anderson, Kent Anderson, Pamela Lutz, Deborah Lutz, Douglas Lutz, Christine Wietzki and husband, Adam, Ryan Peters and wife, Kimberly, Randon Peters and wife, Laurie, Alissa Norlund and husband, Travis, Kayla Ele, Justin Ele, Tonya Skinner and husband, David, Raeth Peters, Reed Peters and wife, Tyler; eight great-grandchildren, Sonny Wietzki, Shauna Wietzki, Veronica Lutz, Cole Leach, Carley Peters, Ryland Peters, Laney Peters and Gavin Peters.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
