NOTE ON BURIAL-MESSAGE RECEIVED May 13, 2002 Dear Sir My name is Tony Garst of Indiana . My mother-in-law is a direct descendant of James Denney of Wayne, Co. Ky. For James burial many list Coopersville, but that is a misconception, it is Gregory. The cemetery is 1/8 mile behind the Clay Hill Baptist church on 776 . The cemetery records in the Monticello library split the county into districts, for some reason the cemetery was put in the Coopersville district but its on the other side of the mountain. It's a 15 mile drive from Coopersville to the Denney cemetery. What is a coincidence is that I also know the Denneys from In. In fact the other James Denney is buried within 20 feet of my property. I couldn't find his stone, the cemetery is in bad shape, but I found his sons, and some Southard's buried next to him, so we know now the Southard's go with the Indiana Denney's. Wife Esther buried Coopersville, Wayne County, KY (Denny Cemetery). Esther was a charter member of Old Bethal Church in 1810 in Wayne County, KY. Settled in Patrick County,VA near the Bull Mountains. If anyone reads Guy C.

Notes from research by Richard Denney and Sam Hardesty:

Settled Patrick Co. VA near Bull Mountain. (from Joel Denny's letter on Denney History)
Birth and Death dates from William Denney, Vancouver, WA, September 1996.
Wife Esther buried Coopersville, Wayne Co. KY (Denney Cemetery). Esther was a charter member of Old Bethal Church, 1810 in Wayne Co. KY.
Additional notes about children:
Sarah buried in Turkey Creek, Wayne Co., KY or MO.
Jeremiah buried Gregory or Coopersville, Wayne Co., KY (Jeremiah Denney Cemetery). Jeremiah;s wife Sarah Harris' last name may have been Morris.
William's wife first name may have been Patsy.
Rachel buried near Sparta, White Co., TN (Nathaniel Austin Plantation Cemetery).
Ursula's first name may have been Ursley, Emilia or Amilla.

Jan. 1978 Letter & genealogy from Don Denney “General Information and Anecdotes”

Kentucky, which was originally the western part of Virginia and which itself became a State in 1792, did not officially secede from the Union in 1861. It was later occupied in part by the Confederate government and did send representatives to the South. No doubt there was considerable dissension among the Kentuckians during this time, and perhaps among our ancestors.

The attached map indicates the early influence in Wayne County of some of the ancestors of John Dee Denney and wife, Elizabeth Dodson. There are shown the village of Denney (Denney’s Gap) Denney Road, Denney Creek and Denney Hollow. There are also shown Dodson and Burnett Roads and Dodson Hollow.

The village of Gregory, Kentucky was not much more than a country store and post office, but which served a larger area. Are references to Gregory for location include the area served. The Post Office is now discontinued with the mail delivered via Rt. 2, Monticello, KY 42633. The store is still there.

The village of Denney’s Gap, Kentucky was also a very small place, but its post office, founded by Dupy Denney, served a larger area, this Post Office was just recently discontinued with the mail delivered via Delta, KY 42613.

The Sinking Consolidated School is now located near the store at Gregory. One old school house, attended by George Washington Denney and his wife to be Lula Ann New, still exists. It has been moved south about a mile and is now located at the road intersection just west of Gregory. At the old school site there was once a huge log; all the boys who could jump it were Republicans and those who could not were Democrats, or was it vice-versa. It is noted that women did not have the right to vote until 1920.

Elizabeth Dodson was granted 397 acres of land as a dowry from her parents in 1882. This was located on Raleigh (Rolly) Creek about 2 miles from Gregory. She was previously married to John Dee Denney in 1873. Together they farmed this land. The old log home, with clapboards later placed thereon in part by George Washington Denney still stands, although it is now used for storage. The domestic water supply came from a nearby spring, which still flows the same as before. The Dodson cemetery is located on the east side of this farm, in which is buried several ancestors and relatives. The place was sold in the 1930s and is presently owned by Harold Morrow, Rt. 2, Monticello, KY. He is the son of Willy Morrow, a brother of Thomas C. Morrow.
