Elizabeth Ann Samford

Second wife of James McCain Hughes. Mother of George, William Clinton, Mary Emeline, Sarah, Barbara, Lizzie, W.L., Henderson, James Riley, Issac Columbus, Simon, and Aquilla.
Elizabeth carried a big black Bible with her in a wagon everywhere she went. They established a log cabin church in Sardis, Shelbyville, Shelby County, Texas. About 10 yrs. after James McCain Hughes died the present Methodist church in Sardis was built. Elizabeth Ann and her children's names are all signed on the church documents. James and Elizabeth are buried in the Sardis Methodist Cemetery (with Texas Stars on their monuments) next to the church.
