Individual Details
Loren Oran Newell
(18 Oct 1942 - 4 May 2016)
On a cool, foggy Sunday, October 18, 1942, Don and Bonnie Newell welcomed their only son, L. Oran Newell, into the world. His big sister, Evelyn, excitedly greeted him a few days later.
Oran went to his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.
Oran grew up on the family farm in Hawley, Oklahoma, where he was an active member at Bethel Hawley Baptist Church. He attended Nash School, where he was active in baseball and FFA. He graduated from Nash High School in 1960. After high school, Oran attended Northwestern in Alva and went on to graduate from OSU in Stillwater with a major in Vocational Agriculture in 1964.
While in college, Oran met Sharon Kay Hiatt of Ponca City. They married on May 26, 1964. After they married, Oran and Kay moved to Kensington, Kansas, where he taught vo-ag. While in Kensington, they welcomed their first daughter, Synthia. In May 1966, Oran and Kay returned to the Hawley area to work with his parents on the family farm. A few years after returning to the Hawley area, they welcomed their second "tax write-off," Laurie. Oran and Kay raised their family and served in the Hawley/Nash/Wakita area until Kay's death in 1992. After Kay's death, Oran continued farming and worked for Grant County District 3, where he retired in 2008.
After attending a Valentine's Day party with his church, Oran met the second love of his life, Cleta Hulsey of Wakita. They were married in May 1994, and Oran gained three sons, Greg, Steven, and Jeff. Cleta and Oran resided on the farm for awhile then moved to Wakita, where they lived at the time of his passing. Oran and Cleta enjoyed serving at Bethel Hawley Baptist Church, attending events for their grandchildren, and traveling as much as they could.
Oran was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Bonnie Newell; his first wife, Kay; and his stepson, Greg Hulsey.
He is survived by his wife Cleta, of the home; sister Evelyn Scheltens and husband Jack of Moreno Valley, California; daughter Synthia Foster and husband Willie of Enid; daughter Laurie McAlister and husband Derald of Yukon; stepson Steven Hulsey and wife Christy of Blanchard; stepson Jeff Hulsey and wife Christy of Mannford; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and many cousins and friends.
Visitation will be 1:15-1:45 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Bethel Hawley Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Gary Lillie officiating. Interment to follow at Hawley Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Hawley Baptist Church or Hawley Fire Department. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek.
