William Stephen Northen

(5 Jul 1826 - 29 Apr 1855)

"William Stephen Northen was born in Jones Co., Georgia., date unknown (since found out), and was a ward of his uncle Peter Northen, having been left an orphan at the age of five years. He received a fair education for the time in which he lived and on arriving at manhood, engaged in the mercantile business first at Cusseta, Ala., and later at Opelika, Ala. He was unsuccessful, losing what was then considered a small fortune and saving only enough from the wreck to purchase a small farm. With this he went to Chambers Co., Ala., and purchased a place, on which after his death, his family continued to live. He died of consumption, April 29:1855 and was buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chambers Co., Ala. He was a member of the M.E. Church, and in politics was a Whig. He is said to have been noted for his integrity and liberality. He had dark hair and eyes and rather dark skin, was six feet and one inch in height with a large square frame, and when in health weighed about 190 pounds." -Eugene Ernest Northen, from A SHORT HISTORY OF THE NORTHEN FAMILY IN THE UNITED STATES 1635-1900.
