Sir George Throckmorton
(1480 - 6 Aug 1552)
Knight of Coughton, Warwickshire. Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, High Steward of Evesham Abbey, Esquire to the Body of the King.
Son and heir to Sir Robert Throckmorton of Coughton and his second wife, Katherine Marrow, daughter of Sir William, Lord Mayor of London. George was born about 1489 in Worcestershire.
George married Katherine Vaux, the daughter of Sir Nicholas Vaux of Great Harrowden and Elizabeth FitzHugh, an extremely advantageous marriage politically. They were married in 1512 and had eight sons and nine daughters:

George was the first Throckmorton to have a seat at Parliament, and lived at Coughton Court. He was educated at Middle Temple, admitted 1 May 1505, succeeded his father in 1519, was knighted in 1523 and became the Justice of Peace of Warwickshire in 1510 until his death. George is best known for his involvement in the divorce between King Henry and his first wife Catherine of Aragon. He had a lengthy and political career, which can be found on the web.

""Under the eastern arch on the north side of the chancel is a large altar-tomb, 9 ft. long, to Sir George (who died in 1552) and Dame Katherine his wife. It is of grey marble with cusped panelled sides containing brass shields, and a moulded top slab in which are their brass effigies. He is represented in armour and she wears a pedimental head-dress, a loose mantle, and belted skirt. Below are the figures of eight sons and eleven daughters, and there are four shields of arms, charged with Throckmorton impaling Vaux, Throckmorton, Throckmorton impaling Abberbury, and quarterly Throckmorton, Abberbury, Spiney, Bosom. Some of the shields on the sides of the base are missing: two remain and are coloured. One on the south side is charged with the quarterly Throckmorton coat. The other on the north side is also quarterly but has Throckmorton in the 4th quarter instead of the first. In the marginal inscription, the dates of their deaths were never filled in and the inscription does not cross the east end."
