Funeral service for Donald Nickerson Blackwelder, 76, of Alexander City, will be Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Rev. Clyde Coker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 26, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.
Mr. Blackwelder passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at his residence. He was born on November 22, 1938 in Tallapoosa County to Argus Blackwelder and Capitola Abbett Blackwelder. He was an active member of Comer Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Blackwelder loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He worked as a Security Guard at the Sportplex for the City of Alexander City. Mr. Blackwelder served on active duty during Desert Storm in the Alabama Army National Guard and retired after 36 years of service to his country. Mr. Blackwelder enjoyed being outdoors and vacationing at Panama City Beach. He was a great friend and never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Hamby Blackwelder of Alexander City; daughter, Donna Oates (Malcolm); son, Dwayne Blackwelder (Melinda); grandchildren, Laina Blackwelder Barnes (Ben), Dani Oates, Chad Oates (Kayleigh), Jessica Kuehner (Drew), and Brooke Blackwelder; great-grandchildren, Laylan Barnes, Kellan Barnes, and Grace Kuehner.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
