GRACE, Idaho -- Irene Allen Young, 85, of Grace, Idaho, passed away Wednesday July 30, 2003 at the Spring Creek Manor in Soda Springs. She was born Nov. 13, 1917, at Banida, Idaho, the daughter of Henry Heber and Reda Ricks Allen Jr.
Irene married Howard Barfuss Young May 20, 1942, in the Logan LDS Temple. He passed away July 31, 1999.
Irene spent her earlier years in Cove and Swan Lake, Idaho. She taught for three years at Grace Elementary before her marriage, having received a Provisional Teaching Certificate from Idaho State University. After living 30 years in Thatcher, Howard and Irene moved to Grace in 1972.
Irene later received a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1962 from USU. She had taught school for 26 years before retiring in 1979. She served as vice president and president of the 5th District Classroom Teachers and president of the State Department of Classroom Teachers.
She was member of the Grace LDS 1st Ward and had served in many stake and ward positions. She was involved in Girls Camp for over 10 years and was a 4-H leader for 20 years.
Irene's interests included gardening, quilting and other homemaking arts. She also made over 200 wedding cakes and was acitive in DUP.
She is survived by three sons and one daughter: Dale H. Young of Hyrum, Glenn and Linda Young of Orlando, Rob and Sherry Young of Pocatello, Idaho, and Carol and Crae Williams of Grace, Idaho. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and four brothers and four sisters: Roland Allen of Logan, Paul Allen of Dolan Springs, Ariz., Dean Allen of Philmoth, Ore., Preston Allen of Declo, Idaho, Carma Mineer of Salt Lake City, Barbara Chambers of Shoshone, Idaho, Eunice Lindblom of St. George and Louise Whitmer of Hanover, Pa. She was also preceded in death by two sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Grace LDS Stake Center. Family will meet friends on Friday evening at the Sims Funeral Home in Soda Springs from 7 to 8 p.m. and also at the Grace Stake Center on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Thatcher Cemetery. The family suggests donations to the Grace Library.
Services are under the direction of the Sims Funeral Home.
