Individual Details
William A. Maner
(1825 - 18 Aug 1893)
UPDATE: INFO PROVIDED BY Rob Walker (#47570151) THANKS!
Sorry, I cannot improve on the dates of birth & death but his wife died on the same day so at least her year of death should match William's.
The following is based on a 1974 book by Edna Finney Allison who is now deceased herself.
William A. Maner received a land grant in Hays Co., Texas. He was patentee and original grantee for the 160 acres.
Hays County Census Record - 1870
Age Sex Race born
W. A. Maner 40 M W Farmer S.C.
Elizabeth " 26 F W Keeping house Mississippi
Sarah " 8 F W At home Tex.
Anner " 6 F W At home Tex.
William " 4 M W At home Tex.
Note: Ages are guessed at by census enumerator and are not usually correct.
That is why an 1850 Census shows Williams age as 25 giving a date of birth of about 1825 with birth Alabama. The 1870 Census gives age as 40 giving a date of birth of about 1830 with birth in South Carolina. His tombstone shows date of birth as 1845.
William A. Maner and his wife Phoebe both died the same day in 1893 at Spring Creek in Gillespie County where they lived and are buried. Their deaths are thought to have been caused by food poisoning. Their daughter, Sarah, also died the same day. She had been visiting her parents, then returned to her home where she died.
There was quite a large settlement on Spring Creek at that time. However, it can no longer can be reached from the highway, but a small dirt road can be used and then the last couple of blocks or so by walking. All that remains of the settlement is a rather large cemetery.
Real appreciation goes to John E. Maner and wife Laura for having the tombstones placed at the graves of William A. Maner and his wife Phoebe, and for the care of their graves.
