P. Wayne Wingate, treasured husband to JoAnn and father to David, Laurie and Leigh Ann, was ushered into his heavenly celebration on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, surrounded by his beloved family members. He leaves behind a marvelous legacy of devotion and faithfulness to his Savior, Jesus Christ, his family, and a multitude of dear friends. Wayne was born Nov. 13, 1931, in Mansfield to parents Roushia Andrew Wingate and Ruby Pearl Brown Wingate. He graduated from Mansfield High School in 1947 at age 16, then attended business college and worked for Swift Packing Plant in Lake Charles. He attended Louisiana Tech, was a 1951 graduate of Baylor University with a degree in English and history, then received a master's degree in religious education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1954. He served as a minister of youth and education in churches in Louisiana and Texas, worked for the Department of Labor in Baton Rouge, then was co-owner of Agapeland Childcare in Baker for 31 years from 1978 to 2009. He is survived by his precious wife of 51 plus years, Margaret JoAnn Odom Wingate; son, David Wingate; daughters, Laurie Wingate Hamilton, and Leigh Ann and husband Paul Brill; daughter-in-law, Millie Wingate; five grandchildren, Katie Wingate, Rebekah Brill, Hagen Hamilton, Benjamin Brill, Matt Janes; great-grandchild, Melody Janes; a second great-granddaughter, Madison, is on the way, due April 1; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sherry Wingate, of Baton Rouge; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. Opportunity to share your love and encouragement with the family will be provided at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, on Sunday, Feb., 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial celebration of life will be held the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28. Interment to follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
