Helen McColl Alexander
(22 Sep 1927 - 20 Aug 2013)
Helen McColl Kendall, 85, a forever young free spirited, genuine Hawaiian and life-long love of Harry H. Kendall , died Tuesday, August 20, 2013 in Port Huron Hospital.
She was born September 22, 1927 in Maui, Hawaii to the late Herman and Helen Alexander. She married Harry Herbert Kendall on June 17, 1950 in Port Huron.
Helen taught kindergarten for nine years in Wayne Westland School District. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and P.E.O. She was involved in Girl Scouts, Arche' Club and Rotary.
Helen is survived by an immediate and extended family that includes nearly everyone who ever came in contact with her sunny disposition and almost constant heartfelt smile. Her husband, Harry; five children, Lynn (David) Carpenter, Duncan (Flor) Kendall, Michele (Rich) Kendall-Williams, Judy (William) Rader and Melissa (Jim) Rizer; 11 grandchildren, Allan (Jill), Michael, James, Gabriel, Amanda(Lee), Elizabeth (Melvin),Kelsey, Logan, Spencer, Alexander, and Vivian; one great granddaughter, Gabrielle Helen Carpenter; her sister, Mary Ann (Howard) Christenson; sister in law, Delphine Alexander; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her son, Lorne Kendall; and a brother, Duncan Alexander.
Her grandchildren adapted to exactly how they heard Helen referred to in nearly every sentence Harry uttered about his wife as simply "Honey" and not grandma. Raised on Maui with her brother, Duncan and sister, Mary Ann by her loving parents, Helen moved to Port Huron after her father passed away. She attended Hillsdale College in the late 40's where she met Harry on a wonderful blind date that lasted 65 years. As with any true islander, Helen was more comfortable barefoot, never afraid of enjoying a host of lakefront activities and always willing to embrace newcomers in an extended family that included hundreds of friends, acquaintances and neighbors. An aficionado of breads, beaches, books and babies, Helen was an active listener who embraced life and people with equal enthusiasm.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 in Grace Episcopal Church with visiting starting at 12:00 noon. Reverend Lydia Speller will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.
